Increasingly, businesses are using internet marketing to promote their
products or services. Some businesses use e-mail advertising, others
may use banner ads placed on specific websites. Two commonly used and
highly effective methods of internet advertising are pay-per-click search engine advertising and search engine optimization, or SEO. Both pay-per click and SEO have the same goal- to get a link to your website placed as high as possible on the search page.
If you've ever used a search engine, you have probably noticed the
column of ads on the right hand side of the search page. This form of
internet marketing is known as pay-per-click and is exactly what the name implies. Advertisers open an account with the search engine, and bid on how much they are willing to pay for each potential customer who clicks on the ad. The more you are willing to pay, the higher on the column your ad will be placed. The ad will include a keyword and a brief description of the product or service the business is promoting.
The great advantage of this sort of advertising is that it gets fast results. The downside to pay-per-click is that it can be expensive, and is mainly used by businesses with relatively high profit margins who can definitely afford to use this form of advertising. But many online business owners find that the results are worth the expense. Be advised though to study the system first to know what you’re doing otherwise it could become a very costly exercise.
Search engine optimization is another effective form of Internet
marketing. SEO means that the business is trying to get their website a top ten search engine postition. SEO involves the use of specific keywords written into short articles on your website or published elsewhere on the internet with a link to your website. Few people click on the second or third search page when they do an internet search, and many will not even want to scroll down the first page, so the higher your website appears, the more traffic you will get.
You can also boost your search engine ranking by persuading the owners of other websites to link to yours. Trading links with related businesses is a common way of doing this. You may need to hire a service to help determine which keywords are most effective, or to help with composing your keyword articles, but it costs nothing for your website to come up on a search engine page. Your cost will be substantially less than with pay-per-click. The main disadvantage to
SEO is the time factor. It will take a while for your website to make
it into the search engine's top ten, but once it does, it becomes a
veritable gold mine for attracting customers. Patience is a virtue with
SEO, but it can be a highly profitable one.
Pay-per-click and search engine optimization are both effective methods
of internet marketing. Online businesses can use pay-per-click when
they are first starting out for the fast results, then phase it out in
favor of SEO as customers click on links that lead to their websites.
Both methods have disadvantages, but once you've learned how to use them, they will bring many customers to your website and boost your online business considerably.
